Stubb’s Bar-B-Q

801 Red River, 480-8341

Sunday Gospel Brunch seatings at 11am & 1pm, $14.95, reservations suggested

Sunday gospel brunches used to be more prevalent around Austin than they are today, but Stubb’s still has a regular amen corner every weekend. It only seems fitting, since the restaurant is also one of the city’s most popular music venues and the legendary founder was famous for feeding musicians. At Stubb’s, the food and the music go hand in hand. It’s a good idea to make reservations for one of the two seatings so as not to miss the inspirational shows put on by rotating gospel groups such as the Gospel Stars, the Original Bells of Joy, and the hot New Soul Invaders. The recent buzz around town says the quality of Stubb’s food has appreciated greatly since Houston hotshot Dan Nix has taken over the kitchen; brunch would be the perfect time to give Nix’s chow a taste. The buffet always includes a full line of breakfast items such as eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, biscuits, gravy, fresh fruit, grits, and cold cereals. It’s also probably the only brunch in town where you can augment your breakfast selections with barbecued chicken, sausage, and brisket with sides of beans and potato salad. It’s hard to get more Texas than that.
