The original location on Burnet was opened in 1933 by Kenneth Threadgill, and was made famous as the place where Janis Joplin used to play in the Sixties. The new location on Riverside sits next to the former site of Eddie Wilson’s Armadillo World Headquarters. Today, both locations are owned by Wilson and serve Southern-style dishes such as chicken fried steak, meatloaf, roast pork, fried oysters, and catfish. Many Austinites require regular shots of the vegetable and side dishes. Go for the food, or go for the scene: Threadgill’s has an Austin pedigree that is hard to beat.
