Over two thousand applicants and 12 finalists later, Alamo Drafthouse has found two milkshakes worthy of spots on their menu.
Grand prize winner Mary Houseman will have her concoction Concessions of a Dangerous Mind on Alamo menus nationwide, and runner up Natalie Thompson’s Lemony Thickness: A Series of Fortunate Ingredients will be on local Alamo menus for approximately three months. Houseman’s mixture of root beer, peanut butter, caramel syrup and malt won the judges over because of its conglomerated use of movie theater snacks. Thompson’s citrus-y shake used ingredients like prosecco and brown sugar lemonade. All 12 finalists received a $50 gift card.
The simple rules of using a vanilla ice cream base with up to five additional ingredients (that could be found in Alamo’s pantry) while adding a catchy cinema-themed name left room for much interpretation, with entries like Wakin’ Bacon and A Chocwork Orange.
Judges included Alamo Drafthouse founder and CEO Tim League, Alamo corporate chef John Bullington, corporate beverage director Bill Norris and food writer Addie Broyles.
