Is it safe to go back in the salsa? Last week, the Food and Drug Adminis-tration and the Centers for Disease Control announced they had finally found the “smoking gun” in the months-long national outbreak of salmonella Saintpaul. The contamination was traced to farms in the Mexican states of Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, where jalapeño peppers, serrano peppers, and some tomatoes were grown. For the time being, consumers are advised to avoid jalapeño and serrano peppers imported from Mexico. As always, homegrown and locally grown produce is the safest bet.
