No trip to Austin should be considered complete without a pilgrimage to one or both of the Threadgill’s locations. The original North outlet is arguably the cradle of the Austin music scene, where blue yodeler Kenneth Threadgill pumped gas, served beer, and created a music venue for the likes of Janis Joplin. The South store sits near the former home of legendary Austin honky-tonk the Armadillo World Headquarters and houses priceless memorabilia from that much-beloved club. While many folks come to Threadgill’s for chicken fried steak and other definitive renditions of Texas down-home cooking, it’s also possible to create hundreds of different veggie combo plates from their huge list of vegetable side dishes and salads. A three-veggie platter ($5.95) or a five-veggie platter ($6.95) with fragrant slabs of warm homemade cornbread will certainly fill you up and always remember, just like at home, second helpings of vegetables are free.
