Fans of food movies and competition cooking shows will not want to miss the first episode of this great new series, which debuts at 7pm, Aug. 30, at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. Accomplished Alamo chefs John Bullington (the Mentor) and Trish Eichelberger (the Protégé) will battle it out in the Alamo’s version of Kitchen Stadium. Alamo founder Tim League will assume the red kimono of Chairman Kaga, and the audience will judge the evening’s competition. The distinctively quirky Alamo twist to this event will be the secret ingredient: not foie gras, king crab, or fennel, but celluloid itself. Each chef will be challenged to develop five small dishes and petite wine pairings to complement the chosen film: Stephen Chow’s 1996 classic comedy God of Cookery. After consuming the film and the sumptuous feast, the audience will decide whose “cuisine reigns supreme.” Future episodes in the series will feature chefs from some of Austin’s top restaurants challenging the Alamo chefs in other epic food movie battles. Tickets are $75, and reservations can be made online at www.originalalamo.com. Sponsors for the evening are the Alamo Drafthouse and Austin RentAll Party. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank.
