The Greater Austin Restaurant Association chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association presented Round Rock culinary student Gabriel Russ a $5000 scholarship at their board meeting last week. The Round Rock High School graduate will continue his pursuit of a career in culinary arts and restaurant management.

This spring, Gabriel Russ was a member of the Round Rock High School culinary team that competed in the 2013 Texas ProStart Invitational cooking competition, sponsored in part by the Texas Restaurant Association. “The most influential part of the competition experience was the level of professionalism and execution demanded of the competitors. I am grateful that I was given the opportunity to see what it looks, feels, and tastes like to be an actual chef competing for a top spot in the kitchen,” Gabriel stated. “My goal is to become a restaurateur and executive chef in a fine dining restaurant.”
“The passion, knowledge, and dedication of Texas ProStart competitors like Gabriel Russ is very inspiring to me,” said Skeeter Miller, Country Line BBQ owner and Greater Austin Restaurant Association chapter president. “Supporting their continued education is essential to the future of our industry.” The association members generated this year’s scholarship funds with their annual golf tournament and the recent Eat. Drink. Woman Celebration showcasing the talents of Austin women chefs.
