When we asked ice-cream entrepreneur and former engineer Mark Alsup what possessed him to give up a secure career for a foray into food service and self-employment, he didn’t hesitate a minute before saying, “I wanted to be around happy people all day. When people walk in the door to the shop, they’re smiling because they know they’re about to get ice cream and they leave smiling because our ice cream makes them happy.”

Well said (and also very true). This attractive little shop in the new Lakeway Colony shopping center has been making people happy for several months now. So happy, in fact, that Paradise Ice Cream showed up in the Chronicle Restaurant Poll after only a couple months in operation. Alsup makes all his own premium ice creams and sherbets; they run the gamut from wonderful chocolate and vanilla to the decadent caramel cashew and chocolate peanut butter. The Paradise shop is fast becoming the dessert destination of choice in the Lakeway area. “We’re noticing that lots of people go out to eat and then stop by here for dessert,” Alsup says. We don’t doubt it. We left here very happy.
