From its humble beginnings on South Con­gress to its fancier new home on Sixth Street, El Sol y La Luna has been a favorite of both locals and visitors alike for the past 15 years. Fans of its fresh take on Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes can count on consistent quality from the kitchen; the staff has remained the same since opening day. Another reason we love it is because it serves breakfast all day, and although it has a regular American-style breakfast menu, its Mexican breakfast plates are the main draw. Here you’ll find standard items like huevos rancheros, huevos à la Mexicana, huevos con chorizo, migas, machacado con huevos, and more, all served with potatoes, beans, and two corn or flour tortillas. There are also vegetarian-friendly omelets served with seasonal fruit and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. We like the Omelet Eclipse ($7), filled with spinach, mushroom, tomato, and onion, and topped with jack and cheddar cheese.

Of course, they also serve breakfast tacos à la carte, including unique options like Anna’s Tofu Taco: stir-fried vegetables and organic tofu on a whole-wheat tortilla with Thai peanut sauce on the side. Weekend specials include posole and menudo (for the adventurous), both reputed hangover cures. Don’t be shy and try an El Sol mimosa made with fresh-squeezed orange juice and Grand Gala orange liqueur, a spicy house bloody Mary, or a cup of good coffee spiked with a shot of Baileys.
