Earlier today, The Daily Meal put out their curated list of America’s Top 25 Donuts and we’re proud to say the Austin metro area is well-represented.
That’s right, two of our own favorite fried pastry treats are recognized as among the best in the country. Coming in at #2 are the big, fluffy, distinctively yellow Plain Glazed doughnuts from the Lone Star Bakery (106 W. Liberty) in Round Rock, known and beloved simply as Round Rock Donuts. This 80-year old Central Texas institution turns out 200 dozen of these hand-made, yeast-risen beauties every day and they are available daily at the bakery and numerous outlets in the metro area.
Down the list at #12, we find the Funky Monkey, a very popular item off the artery-clogging menu of big, fat doughnuts at Austin’s own Gourdough’s (1503 S. First). Now with a brick-and-mortar Public House (2700 S. Lamar)and another Airstream strategically located at the corner of E. Sixth and Red River, these delectable behemoths are much more widely available these days. The Funky Monkey offers up a freshly-fried doughnut topped with cream cheese frosting and bananas grilled with brown sugar; what’s not to love?
