Situated about a block from the entrance to Bastrop State Park, Roadhouse is continually busy, which is always good news, because it ensures that everything is always fresh. Roadhouse specializes in hamburgers, sandwiches, fries, and shakes, but the menu also includes salads, queso and chips, hot dogs, cheesesteaks, and a goodly number of vegetarian items. The hamburgers – the biggest draw – are served open face on a sweet sourdough bun, an onion bun, or a jalapeño cheese bun, and served with house-made fries or sweet potato fries. All the burgers run around $10, and the varieties include avocado cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger, chili cheeseburger, bleu cheese burger, portabella mushroom burger, mushroom Swiss burger, and green chili cheeseburger. The favored menu item, however, is the jalapeño cream cheese burger, a riff on jalapeño poppers. Made with fresh, hot jalapeños and cream cheese, it made Texas Monthly‘s “50 Greatest Hamburgers in Texas” list in 2009. Road­house also serves real lemonade (made from actual lemons) and root beer floats.
