This weekend Austin will be hosting multiple screenings of Blaze, a biopic on Blaze Foley, a troubled singer-songwriter who lived in Austin and was buddies with the likes of Townes Van Zandt. His life was cut short when he was murdered at age 39.
The film, which was warmly received at Sundance and SXSW, was directed by Ethan Hawke, written by Blaze’s “muse” Sybil Rosen (played by Alia Shawkat), and stars first-time actor Ben Dickey. Hawke and Dickey will be palling around town over the next few days hosting post-screening Q&As at some of the theatres where the film is opening. There’s also an Austin Film Society fundraiser at Violet Crown on Thursday, Aug. 16, where they will be joined by Rosen and Richard Linklater (though that event is sold out). But, don’t fret. There are plenty of chances to catch the filmmakers, and we’ve got a full list below.
