Holiday greetings, friends,
What a convoluted mess American culture is. We gauge success by complete crap, like dollars and web hits, quantifiable nothings in the larger scheme of the human condition. What a short lens through which to view life. The fact that human service nonprofits must exist to fill basic human needs in the richest country on the planet is desperately sad. Seriously. Think of the energy we waste as a society plugging the holes carved by greed. The structure of nonprofits – most based on corporate models – doom them to constant struggle and the annual ask. Oh, the big ask. Why do we make them grovel? Let’s just pony up and fill those holes without having to be begged, shall we? Please, let’s honor the hard work our local caregivers give by simply … giving.
Each year, The Austin Chronicle invites local nonprofits to submit lists of the things they need to serve our community. We edit these as space dictates and encourage you to research the details on what specific kinds/brands/sizes/conditions of things are needed (some are legal mandates, so please do call ahead to make sure your gift is appropriate). Here are a few hints: 1) Please don’t dump off old or broken items. 2) Consider becoming part of a year-round giving program. 3) Nonprofits always need computers/accessories, copies/printing, cash, and your love (i.e., volunteer hours). Whatever you wish to give, call your intended recipient and shower them with your tangible affection.
Let’s support the good these folks do all year long. Let’s fill some wishes, Austin.
