Last Voyage of the Voyagers
Austin’s comedy scene is synonymous with improv, but it’s not all about the “yes, and.” Sketch comedy troupe the Voyagers goes on stage with a lot more than a wing, a prayer, and hopes that the audience has some good prompts. Promising live sketch comedy from the bottom of the barrel of their hearts, these laughs from the end times come from writer/director John Gholson, who is set to become the toast of this year’s Tribeca Festival as star of the new Austin-made horror, Man Finds Tape. Austin’s reputation as an improv comedy town has a lot to do with the trio of Kareem Badr, Kaci Beeler, and Roy Janik, aka Parallelogramophonograph (or PGraph, if you’re nasty). Polite Society & The Assassin
The Austin Asian American Film Festival presents this double feature of only very tangentially related films about, well, ladies kicking ass. They’re both recommended, if a study in tonal contrasts: We Are Lady Parts creator Nida Manzoor helmed 2023 action-comedy Polite Society, about a British-Pakistani teen and wannabe movie stunt performer who must save her sister from an extremely bad marriage match, while Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s 2015 wuxia epic – wherein the titular assassin’s resolve is tested when she’s sent to kill her childhood sweetheart – is deadly serious, and a stunning piece of artistry. – Kimberley JonesTue., June 3 -

Slide in the DMs
She goes by many titles, but perhaps none fit so well in the context of this comedy show as Best of Austin nominee and Slide host Angelina Martin’s self-description as the “hot jock of Austin comedy.” Martin utilizes her jockular style to lead a hilarious monologuer-centric show where local stand-ups reveal their most embarrassing DMs – both incoming and outgoing – as fodder for improvised skits.
