Last Voyage of the Voyagers
Austin’s comedy scene is synonymous with improv, but it’s not all about the “yes, and.” Sketch comedy troupe the Voyagers goes on stage with a lot more than a wing, a prayer, and hopes that the audience has some good prompts. Promising live sketch comedy from the bottom of the barrel of their hearts, these laughs from the end times come from writer/director John Gholson, who is set to become the toast of this year’s Tribeca Festival as star of the new Austin-made horror, Man Finds Tape. But before he terrorizes the Big Apple, catch him and the rest of the Voyagers as they find humor in these dumpster fire days each Saturday night through May. – Richard WhittakerSaturdays -

Midnight Run (1988)
Knowing this Drafthouse guest select comes via Ben Affleck doesn’t surprise me a bit. As one part of a famous filmic duo – I see you, Afflection stans – this butting-heads buddy comedy totally fits as an Affleck pick. Robert De Niro is a down-on-his-luck skip tracer, which is possibly the coolest job title for a relatively scummy profession. After getting assigned by his boss (played by the great Joey Pants) to deliver former mob accountant “the Duke” (Charles freakin’ Grodin), what was supposed to be easy cash turns into a hijinks-filled chase from the East to West Coast. Fans of Martin Brest’s work in previous police comedy Beverly Hills Cop are advised to catch this train to the other side of the law. – James ScottMon., June 2 -

Austin’s reputation as an improv comedy town has a lot to do with the trio of Kareem Badr, Kaci Beeler, and Roy Janik, aka Parallelogramophonograph (or PGraph, if you’re nasty). With over a thousand unique performances under their combined belts, they’ve taken just about every award possible for their approach to improv, which is a lot more than just zany sketches. With their longtime residency at the Hideout coming to a close later this year when the beloved Downtown coffeehouse/theatre closes, catch this Austin comedy royalty in their throne room every Thursday until then. – Richard WhittakerEvery Thursday -

Polite Society & The Assassin
The Austin Asian American Film Festival presents this double feature of only very tangentially related films about, well, ladies kicking ass. They’re both recommended, if a study in tonal contrasts: We Are Lady Parts creator Nida Manzoor helmed 2023 action-comedy Polite Society, about a British-Pakistani teen and wannabe movie stunt performer who must save her sister from an extremely bad marriage match, while Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s 2015 wuxia epic – wherein the titular assassin’s resolve is tested when she’s sent to kill her childhood sweetheart – is deadly serious, and a stunning piece of artistry. – Kimberley JonesTue., June 3 -

Slide in the DMs
She goes by many titles, but perhaps none fit so well in the context of this comedy show as Best of Austin nominee and Slide host Angelina Martin’s self-description as the “hot jock of Austin comedy.” Martin utilizes her jockular style to lead a hilarious monologuer-centric show where local stand-ups reveal their most embarrassing DMs – both incoming and outgoing – as fodder for improvised skits.
