    AB6IX

Well this certainly wasn’t something I was expecting on a Tuesday evening. With the ever-increasingly complicated process to getting a performance visa, and much of the incoming performers from South Korea opting for Houston and Dallas as of late, it’s a pleasant surprise to see a group whose future admittedly was up in the air for a hot second make their way to Austin for the North American leg of their fan tour. AB6IX hit a snag four years ago when one of their members was removed from the group following a DUI (yeah, they don’t take too kindly to that kind of publicity in SK). However, the quartet refused to be deterred, and have worked tirelessly, releasing their first Japanese EPs, a ninth Korean EP, and a collaboration with Faroese singer Reiley. – Cy White

Austin Independent Book Fair Singles Mixer: LGBTQ Night

Despite skipping the first, straight-specific edition of this blind-date business, I come bearing details about Austin Indie Book Fair’s new singles mixer on its more important night: LGBTQ Night. Unattached parties can meet friends, lovers, or just a good book at this color-coded speed-dating game, where green means go and red means “eh, I’m just here for non-romantic fun.” Book vendors line the Radio/East locale, and you’ll also be able to sip one of their myriad drinkables. Plus: Single Mingle Bingo, where it’s all about finding folks who match each square. – James Scott

    Benny Benack III Quartet

Equal parts dexterous improviser and crowd-pleasing crooner, Benny Benack III went viral during the pandemic with his and Veronica Swift’s take on the Gigi Gryce classic “Social Call,” sparking an ongoing jazz revival on the digital frontier. Outside of YouTube, the Pittsburgh-born/NYC-based musician and composer performs a good 300 dates a year, traveling the globe as bandleader, hired gun, and educator for a worldwide following. Having recorded a pilot for an upcoming jazz show on Austin PBS, Benack visits the ATX enough to earn semi-residential status, so he’ll be backed by a trio of monster locals for this date. – Michael Toland

    Electronics Repair Workshop for Teens

I had a dream once that involved me taking apart my laptop to repair it while I lived in a beach house with Sting. And the most unbelievable part of the dream was fixing my own laptop. If I open this thing up, won’t I die? But somehow the Austin Public Library is saying teens can learn to do this. Young’uns ages 13-18 are welcome to join Fix-It Austin and members of the city’s Community PC Program to demystify these magical electric books and get some hands-on learning about troubleshooting repairs. And they even supply the laptops and tools! – Kat McNevins

    Podcasting Workshop

Who among us hasn’t thought, “I bet I’d be pretty good at podcasting if I had the necessary training, access to equipment, and limitless funds?” Enter Austin Public Library, which is offering the first two – and at no cost to you – which we’ll take as a sign that it’s time to unleash your inner podcaster. At Central Library’s fifth-floor Innovation Lounge, an instructor will lead the class in the basics of audio recording and editing, then you’ll get to try your hand at editing on the Digital Makerspace’s provided computers. Space is limited so be sure to register ahead of time; all skill levels welcome. – Kimberley Jones

Tomb Mold, Horrendous, Left to Rot

Damn you to hell, Austin. Every single vacation for the last three decades, ya gotta break my MF-ing stones – literally. Astride Ontological Mysterium, last year’s fourth album from Philly reanimators Horrendous, and The Enduring Spirit, full-length No. 4 by Torontoans Tomb Mold – plus Gatecreeper’s new Dark Superstition – modern death metal just initiated its Golden Era. The progressive zeal and ardor with which these groups fuse classic rock to contemporary extremity resounds positively Rush-like. And to experience the top two genre LPs of 2023 at this biker haven? Metallurgic Show of the Year. Me … I’ll be at the Stones in Santa Clara. @#$%&!!! Left to Rot opens. – Raoul Hernandez

Tree Regulations and the HOME Initiative

Trees are the coolest, right? These things grow out of the ground and boom, you’ve got shelter, you’ve got oxygen, you’ve got food – trees are basically a one-stop shop for all of life’s needs. There’s even a Tree of the Year Awards, which by the way is accepting nominations until July 15. Keeping trees in mind is an important part of housing development, so the city’s Development Services Department invites commentary from the public as new land use regulations are put in place. Join the webinar to learn more and throw in your two cents about trees. – Kat McNevins

    Austin Public Pools Opening

Hoo-wee! Does anything feel better than a dip in the pool during a hot Texas summer? While some among us may be privileged to own private watering holes, most of us get to enjoy the great Austin PARD’s work at the 44 public aquatic facilities to choose from this summer. You’ve got regional, neighborhood, and community pools; a wading pool; splash pads; and the crown jewel: Barton Springs. Check austintexas.gov/pools-splashpads for up-to-date info on which pools are open, what their entry fee is, and whether you have what it takes to be a public pool lifeguard. Now, outta the way if you don’t wanna get wet: I’m gonna do a cannonball! – James Scott

    Community Hours at Thinkery

Children’s growing minds and bodies are always looking for something to do, and it’s costly keeping them occupied. So bring them to Thinkery children’s museum, which “strives to be an inclusive, friendly, inspiring space to learn for our entire community, regardless of income, mental/physical abilities, ethnicity, nationality, race, sexual orientation, gender expression/identity or family status.” From 3 to 7pm Tuesdays, kiddos can visit all the STEAM activities and exhibits like Train Town, the Spark Shop, the Story Nook, and the Move! Studio to have tons of fun while learning and wearing themselves out before bedtime. And it’s all free! Just don’t let them start looking at the not-free items at Toy Joy. – Kat McNevins

    Deanna Miesch: “Flatland Revisited”

Art and … math? Not as improbable as it may seem, especially when seen through the veil of fantasy. And that’s exactly what artist/gallerist/therapist Deanna Miesch does. Compiling works inspired by 1800s mathematician Edwin A. Abbott’s imaginary world of Flatland (with touches of fellow mathematician Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland, of course), Miesch presents reality with a fanciful twist. Her visuals show our world, blurred or tilted a little askew. It’s easy to see portals to another world in every line and angle. What dimensions will you discover? – Cat McCarrey

    Free Day

Art! Oh, I love it. But sadly, when I open my pockets, moths fly out. Good news for me and all my broke friends: Every Tuesday, the Blanton opens its doors to all visitors free of charge. Why, unburdened by the weight of an empty wallet, Austinites can mull the strange world of contemporary womanhood in “Unbreakable: Feminist Visions from the Gilberto Cárdenas and Dolores Garcia Collection.” Or walk beneath the silver and mesh sculptures of Marie Watt’s “Sky Dances Light.” Or explore the past through its artistic pieces in “The Floating World: Masterpieces of Edo Japan.” Or enjoy any of the many, MANY other exhibitions available on this day: all for free. – James Scott
