    Lunar Vacation, Sour Widows

Lunar Vacation’s sunny indie pop fits somewhere between the lackadaisical haze of Mac DeMarco and the spirited rhythms of the Drums. Early hit “Blue Honey” solidified the Georgia quintet’s ability to conjure the best combination of warm synths, honeyed vocals, and breezy guitar to soundtrack a picnic in the park, but 2024 sophomore album Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire – released via local imprint Keeled Scales – expands their usual sonic proclivities. Opener “Sick” aligns with folksier label signees Good Looks and Buck Meek with circular acoustic guitar and bouncy bass as vocalist Gep Repasky ponders bad comedy, luxury apartments, and the destruction of Manhattan. Indie rockers Sour Widows arrive from the Bay to open. – Carys Anderson

      Demons 2 (1986)

Second verse, exactly the same as the first. Director Lamberto Bava and producer Dario Argento had such a smash with their 1985 supernatural gorefest Demons that they lightly rewrote the script and created alleged sequel Demons 2 in less than a year. In the original, a movie audience is overrun by hellspawn summoned through a film premiere. For the sequel, Bava and Argento transferred the action to an apartment complex and made TV the medium of mayhem. Bigger, nastier, and bloodier with the welcome return of the great Bobby Rhodes as the coolest cat to ever use a shotgun against Satan’s minions. – Richard Whittaker

      Shrinky Dink

To be clear, I’m talking about the polystyrene sheets invented by Betty Morris and Kate Bloomberg in 1973. I am NOT talking about the former band name for Sugar Ray, aka Shrinky Dinx. No, no: These are those cute kits where you draw any shape you want on polystyrene, cut it out, and then subject it to such immense heat that it – well you know. It shrinks that dink. No need to bring your own dinks or otherwise to this crafting affair, as Austin Public Library provides all supplies. All you must bring is your own nostalgia for simpler times. – James Scott

      Community Hours at Thinkery

Children’s growing minds and bodies are always looking for something to do, and it’s costly keeping them occupied. So bring them to Thinkery children’s museum, which “strives to be an inclusive, friendly, inspiring space to learn for our entire community, regardless of income, mental/physical abilities, ethnicity, nationality, race, sexual orientation, gender expression/identity or family status.” From 3 to 7pm Tuesdays, kiddos can visit all the STEAM activities and exhibits like Train Town, the Spark Shop, the Story Nook, and the Move! Studio to have tons of fun while learning and wearing themselves out before bedtime. And it’s all free! Just don’t let them start looking at the not-free items at Toy Joy. – Kat McNevins

      Deadline (2012)

From AFS Cinema’s description of their ongoing Canuxploitation series: “In 1974, only three feature films were produced in all of Canada.” Sheesh! What’s a country to do when nobody’s making stuff at home? If you’re a big business man who happens to hold top office in our current year 2025, you say “tariffs” loudly and go back to making Cats our national musical. But if you’re the Canadian government in the Eighties, you raise the tax deduction for homegrown film productions to 100%. Thus, a new filmic gold rush occurs – one that produced famo freaks like David Cronenberg as well as more niche affairs like Deadline, aka Anatomy of a Horror. Co-written by Canadian Maltese director Mario Azzopardi, this thriller gets blood on the typewriter when a horror novelist/screenwriter battles crazy creator’s block. – James Scott

      Easter Bunny Photo Time

Maybe all parents know this the moment their child is born, or maybe you need me to inform you, but the freakin’ Easter Bunny’s at the mall right now. As we speak – or as you read, TBH – he’s sat on a wicker throne aside kiddos in their Sunday best getting photos snapped that elderly relatives will just love. The youth may enjoy the experience, too, as this bespectacled bun’s a handsome fellow with soft fur and a winsome smile. Stop by any time between mall open to close and capture the Easter spirit. Plus, the photo area’s right by the Cheesecake Factory – so lunch/dinner plans made, basically! – James Scott

      Free Day

Art! Oh, I love it. But sadly, when I open my pockets, moths fly out. Good news for me and all my broke friends: Every Tuesday, the Blanton opens its doors to all visitors free of charge. Why, unburdened by the weight of an empty wallet, Austinites can mull the strange world of contemporary womanhood in “Unbreakable: Feminist Visions from the Gilberto Cárdenas and Dolores Garcia Collection.” Or walk beneath the silver and mesh sculptures of Marie Watt’s “Sky Dances Light.” Or explore the past through its artistic pieces in “The Floating World: Masterpieces of Edo Japan.” Or enjoy any of the many, MANY other exhibitions available on this day: all for free. – James Scott
