Divina: Noche Drag Latinx
At the start of her drag career, Divina host Tatiana Cholula told Qmmunity she’d be critiqued for not assimilating enough “American” culture into her acts. “Before I started Divina,” she said, “the scene was rich in amazing Latinx drag performers and artists, but there weren’t any spaces focused on them or they didn’t feel comfortable performing certain songs at certain spaces.” Thankfully, Tatiana did start Divina, and now every other Wednesday you’ll see Oilcan Harry’s stage taken over by the spirits of Latina legends like Gloria Estefan and Paulina Rubio – courtesy of local Latinx drag talent. – James ScottEvery Wednesday -

Having fun and meeting new people is harder than TV makes it seem. Good thing there’s orgs like Queer Black Women Alliance, who’ve got another event series starting this month with First Wednesday. These’ll be open to the full breadth of Black LGBTQIA+ Austinites as a way to “connect after work or just after a long day,” says their Insta. We really have no shortage of trivia events in this town full of smarties, but what grabbed my attention with this one was the quality of the prizes. First place gets $125 to spend at happenin’ host venue Radio, plus $15 to whiskey distillery Still Austin, and second place wins $75 at Radio and $15 at Still. Third place is even a good prize: a bag of high-quality Radio coffee beans and a koozie. So dust off the ol’ brain, grab some buds, and head over to Radio on Wednesdays to give it a go. Words and Wonder: Rediscovering Children’s Literature
One of the pleasures of having a first-rate research center and archive in town is how the Harry Ransom Center will regularly comb through its own vast holdings and hand-pick gems to present in a new context. Hence the HRC’s latest exhibit, “Words and Wonder: Rediscovering Children’s Literature,” which pulls from its manuscript, art, photography, film, and performing arts holdings to spotlight early 20th-century authors and illustrators catering to a young readership. The exhibit includes magic lantern slides from Aesop’s Fables, John Tenniel’s illustrations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Ernest H. Shepard’s indelible images from the Hundred Acre Wood, among other treats. Runs through August 17. – Kimberley JonesThrough August 17
