And this year, of course, it's going (mostly) online – the easier for you to check out such timely presentations as "The Antiracism Activation Kit," "Designing a Field Hospital for COVID Patients," and "Embrace Your Colors: Code-Switching While Working Remotely During a Pandemic."

    Austin Empty Bowl Project

    The need is greater than ever, and all proceeds from this event will benefit Central Texas Food Bank and Meals on Wheels Central Texas. Visit the online store for Sam Hurt's special COVID T-shirt or big beautiful tote bag, the AEBP cookbook, Nancy Elder quilt raffle tickets, online concert tickets, and the online silent auction link. The silent auction includes everything from bowls for you and your dog to restaurant gift certificates. You can also make a tax-deductible donation. For every $25 donated, an empty bowl will be added to food boxes distributed by the Central Texas Food Bank or Meals on Wheels Central Texas.

    Bale Creek Allen Gallery: Jun Kaneko

    Ceramics master Kaneko is increasingly drawn to installations that promote civic interaction, having completed more than 60 public art commissions – including a 250-foot-long tile wall at Aquarium Station in Boston, a three-story wall at the University of Connecticut, and an 88-foot-tall Glass Tower at Omaha's Buffett Cancer Center. (Other large permanent installations can be seen in Osaka, Japan; Kansas City, MO; and at the International Finance Center in Shanghai, China.) Most recently, the artist's been working at the Cuernavaca Raku ceramics studio, experimenting with new glazes and the unpredictability of raku. And now here's a show of his fierce sculptural creations, right there at the BCA outpost in Canopy.

    The beloved Austin holiday shopping experience returns for its 20th year with four shopping options to ensure safety in the time of COVID-19. For in-store shopping, reserve free tickets online for a "no wait" entry. Walk-ins are also welcome, but guests may have to wait outside if it's at capacity. Online shoppers can either pick up items in-store or have them shipped anywhere in the U.S. Personal shoppers and virtual shopping will also be available through the BGAB website.     Futurx 2020: Entra al Laberinto!

    Citizens of Austin! Gather virtually in an interactive online laberinto where audiences can wander from Zoom room to Zoom room to experience Loteria fortune telling, life coaching sessions, burlesque performances, magic rituals, divine tias, DJ sessions, late night rideshares, and more from artists whose Latinidad is queer, trans, feminist, Afrolatinx, and indigenous.     Jennifer Sherburn: Elsewhere

    Jennifer Sherburn, the award-winning director of modern dance series 11:11, presents a voyeuristic dance experience, a self-guided tour of living installations that "transmute the concepts of stage, audience, and performance to acknowledge the barriers keeping us apart — while permitting a glimpse at what may be happening inside their confines." This featured part of the Austin Studio Tour features dancers Jairus Carr, Ciceley Fullylove, Lisa Anne Kobdish, Hailley Lauren, Taryn Lavery, Alex Miller, Clay Moore, Amy Myers, Sarah Annie Navarrete, and Marcie Bruscato Poss, in compelling kinesis all around the Rogge House Ranch. Note: Bring a mask and prepare for proper distancing.

    Straight from the honeycomb, Daniel Sahad's timbre pours smooth, slow, and sweet as juxtaposed to the six-string metallic shuffle and outburst of percussion on opener "This I Know." Study in contrasts, "Always on My Mind" and single "Clementine Tree" reveal the Dominican Republic native's humble falsetto that alternatively soars to a holler with unbridled abandon. Nané is an ecstatic, expansive debut flowing in multiple directions. Producer John Speice IV (Grupo Fantasma, Brownout) gives the Austin quintet ample breathing room from guitarist Ian Green's rhythmic strut in "Wolverine" and JaRon Marshall's psychedelic keys in "Pink Jag." Grounding all, Sahad's expressive voice demonstrates impressive vocal range and power. In a stilling, late-LP twofer, "Ladybird" drifts weightlessly, like a flitting candle wick supplicating the stinging ache of R&B burner "Something's Got to Give" as his voice opens the sky and scorches the earth all the same. Experience it live at Empire Garage on Saturday in two release shows.

    Northern-Southern: Baton

    This is a group show by relay, begun in July of 2020 as a method of socially distancing a community in the height of the pandemic: Artists took turns alone in the space, each adding to the exhibition. Now, as it nears its close, the exhibition resembles a community in which work converses and overlaps. With Adreon Henry, Vy Ngo, Dawn Okoro, Leon Alesi, Matt Steinke, Sev Coursen, Stella Alesi, and more.

    Texas Book Festival

    We told you about the Texas Teen Book Festival last week; now we're championing the 25th annual Texas Book Festival's adult programming. It's a virtual to-do this year, of course, with all manner of events, kicking off with the First Edition Literary Gala (Fri., Nov. 6, 7:30pm), featuring authors Julia Alvarez, Nick Hornby, and Natasha Trethewey, with emcee Michael Ian Black. From there, it's authors and celebrities all the way down, with the likes of Jodi Picoult, Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Mychal Denzel Smith, Cory Doctorow, Ottessa Moshfegh, James Wade, Amanda Eyre Ward, Jonathan Lethem, and many more, dazzling your favorite screen with various magnitudes of literary éclat.
