Roller Derby Update: 11/27/10

The 2010 Roller Derby season may be technically over, but there's still plenty of news, starting with a pick-up bout in Houston this weekend.

A group of current and former Texas Rollergirls are heading down to Houston to play against some of Houston Roller Derby's finest at the Autorama car show. The bout starts 2pm Sunday, Nov. 28 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas, Houston. General admission to the entire show is $18, $5 for children 6-12. Who's skating? Let's just say there's rumors of some very familiar names that haven't been seem on the track in a while.

After that, the Texas Rollergirls will be holding a two-day boot camp on December 4-5 for intermediate and advanced skaters. The 60 slots available cost $125 a piece, and that includes tuition, a bootcamp t-shirt and training manual, plus some meals. More information and registration details here

At this end of IH-35, TXRG has announced the dates for the 2011 season. This will be their inaugural season for the league at the Convention Center, and tickets will go on sale soon.

Beyond Austin

Speaking of calendars, the Women's Flat Track Derby Association has announced the schedule for the 2011 tournament season. Texas will be traveling to Kansas City to compete for the top slot in the South-Central region (which has recently been boosted with the addition of Albuquerque's Duke City Derby and the Omaha Rollergirls. Here's the full 2010 schedule:

Sept. 16-18, 2011: East Regionals in Baltimore, Md. Co-hosted by the Charm City Roller Girls, and the DC Rollergirls.

Sept. 23-25, 2011: West Regionals in Portland, Ore. Hosted by the Rose City Rollers.

Sept. 30-Oct. 2: South Central Regional Playoffs in Kansas City, Mis. Hosted by the Kansas City Roller Warriors.

Oct. 7-9, 2011: North Central Regionals in Indianapolis, Ind. Hosted by the Naptown Roller Girls.

Nov. 11-13, 2011: WFTDA Championship Tournament in Denver, Col. Hosted by the Denver Roller Dolls.

Speaking of nationals, both Sports Illustrated and Huffington Post were at the 2010 Nationals, the Uproar on the Lakeshore in Chicago, earlier this month. The keen-eyed amongst you should recognize Austin's own Texecutioners Shank and the Angie Christ, as well as Ruby Wring and Luce Bandit, in the HuffPo photogallery.

If you live outside of Austin but are looking to skate for a derby league in Texas near you, both the Cen-Tex Sirens (covering Temple, Waco and Killeen) and Amarillo's own Route 66 Derby are both looking for skaters and refs. Amarillo is currently being mentored by the Texas Rollergirls as part of the WFTDA's apprentice program.

And, finally, more proof of how truly internationalized Roller Derby has become. Roll DMC, the first ever German Roller Derby championship will take place in Berlin on Dec. 11. WFTDA apprentice league Bear City Rollerderby will be hosting teams from four other German leagues: Stuttgart Valley Rollergirlz, Essen's Devil Dolls, the Baroque City Rollergirls from Ludwigsburg and Hamburg's Harbor Girls. If that sounds like a little bit far to go, even for a tournament, then the London Rollergirls hold their third bout of the season on the same day.
