As part of an on-going commitment to self-empowerment, Positive
Threads, a Central Texas newsletter serving persons living with HIV and
those affected, will present a mini-conference on Saturday, Sept. 28 focused on
treatment issues and healthy living.
Featured speakers will include Jennifer Jensen, RD, an HIV/AIDS nutrition
specialist and author of the Nutrition Power series which appears monthly in
Positive Threads. Ms. Jensen will report news from the XI International
AIDS conference on nutrition intervention and also discuss drug and food
interactions. Also featured at the day-long event will be Dr. David Wright,
with the HIV Study Group and Blackstock Family Health Center, presenting an
update from the Vancouver AIDS conference on the antiviral management of HIV
disease. Having just returned from the ICAAC Conference which focuses on
treatment developments for various diseases, Dr. Robert Kasper with the David
Powell Clinic will report on the prevention and treatment of opportunistic
disease. These will be informal sessions with ample opportunity for questions
from the audience. As an added feature for rest and relaxation, the HIV
Wellness Center will offer a program on the benefits of massage therapy which
will include an opportunity for participants to receive chair massage.
The event, “Something for Everyone…” is scheduled for Saturday, September
28, 9:30am-3:30pm at the St. David’s Episcopal Church Annex on San Jacinto
(between Seventh and Eighth). Joining Positive Threads as co-producers
are the HIV Wellness Center and Informe: SIDA in association with the ASA
Wellness Education Program, the HIV Study Group, and the Friends of the David
Powell Clinic. All presentations will be interpreted for the deaf and
hearing-impaired. A continental breakfast, 9:30-10am will precede the day’s
sessions and participants are invited to gather for a buffet luncheon served
12:30-1:30pm. Attendance is free and open to persons living with HIV disease,
their caregivers, health and social service providers and other interested
persons seeking to increase their knowledge. For additional information, call
