This Monday morning I cracked an egg on myself, if you’re curious how your faithful Qmmunity editor’s life outside the column space is going. To be honest, the worst part of gooey unfertilized egg mess being all over myself and the floor was knowing I had to clean it up. Ugh! Isn’t it enough for me to have accidentally wasted a precious yolk all over my Britney Spears sleep shirt? Now I have to try and scoop the ooze away – a task that’s harder than I thought it’d be – while also changing into a different oversized novelty shirt. Everything feels like a metaphor these days – like ah yes, this absent-minded shell smash echoes social upheaval due to lack of care or egg crack = trans awakening = praxis??? –  but to be honest, sometimes stuff just sucks. I’m trying to be better about recognizing the difference between meaningful suffering and stupid suffering, and this falls under the latter category, me thinks.

While I’m here cleaning yolk off Britney, a note: Last week someone left a comment asking for more daytime events, which, to be fair, is a worthy ask even though Halloween is unfortunately a very nighttime heavy occasion. Here’s why I’m mentioning it: If YOU have queer events happening during the light hours, please send ’em to me! I try my best to add as many queer events as possible, but there’s limits to my purview that I need filled in by y’all reaching out. You know the contact: jscott@austinchronicle.com. I hope to see the sunny shindigs pour in soon.

In the Calendar

Looking for an Angel

Friday 7 & Saturday 8, AFS Cinema

It’s a well-trodden pipeline, the director whose work gets brushed off as pornographic transforming into an arthouse legend. Add Akihiro Suzuki to the list, the director of this moody odyssey across Tokyo and the small Japanese town of Kochi. When young gay porn actor Takachi is found dead, his two best friends travel back to his hometown, the last place he visited. Though at the time of its release, it was mostly seen as gay “pink” cinema – pink being a term for indie Japanese erotic film with nudity – this restoration by the director canonizes it as an experimental queer cult classic exploring friendship, grief, memory, and desire, drenched in hazy pastel hues. – Lina Fisher

Fest spotlights local small businesses, features diverse local artists and performers, and connects grassroots organizations with Austinites. Hosted by the Dolly of ATX, Brigitte Bandit, B.R.A.V.E. Fest welcomes performances by Step It Up Dance, Chantel Deniese, the Latin Dukes, and more. All ages can attend this family- and furry-friendly event celebrating culture and inclusivity. – Felicity Guajardo

Dark Unseelie Gala

Satuday 8, Tiny Minotaur Tavern

Night falls and the blood moon rises, which means the Unseelie Elven Vampire Court, aka the Confluence, is throwing a got-dang party. If you’re not so into the lore, let me clue you in: Local live-action role-play spot Tiny Minotaur is an entirely artist-run venture where revelers both costumed and non can enjoy themed fun, food, and bevs. How do they afford that Cesar Chavez locale along with paying their performers and collaborators? Why, that’s memberships and fundraising events like this particular party. So if you wanna indulge in luxurious fantasy finery, gothic opulence, and other ethereal etc. and so on, snag a ticket to the only ancient vampire queen gathering that also supports local creators. – James Scott
