Despite the weather making me feel like more wax melt than human person, despite the upcoming Lege special session featuring ANOTHER bathroom bill, and despite my crossbody bag still being sans Labubu, life continues apace for queer events in July. Folly, TBH, to believe any new goofed-up government overreach – as it appears Gov. Abbott proposes to “protect women’s spaces” by making it easier for scolds to stick their noses into everyone’s bathroom stalls, I guess – would dampen the queer Texan’s social spirit. We’re creatures of community, who enjoy a good time whether it’s for a charitable cause or just to freakin’ get down.
Anyway: There’s, like, real women’s spaces that are welcoming without needing to check your birth certificate, including this Friday’s scorching all-sapphic, all-BIPOC lineup at the Courtyard-located Heat Waves or the Vylette Ward-hosted bingo night at woman-owned sports spot 1972 Pub (see Thursday 31). Despite what any of the Goofuses in our state and federal govs spout off about, real safety for all genders comes from respect, not fear. But to understand that, they’d have to actually recognize women as full complete people rather than political fodder – so don’t hold your breath on that.
