Reader, today I come to you with advice handed down by this yearโ€™s indie bookstore day ambassador LeVar Burtonโ€™s classic childrenโ€™s show: Take a look; itโ€™s in a book! Yes, this Saturday, April 25, is Independent Bookstore Day across the nation. Weโ€™re blessed in ye olde Bat City to have several queer indie book spots โ€“ Reverie Books (Menchaca), TOMO Mags (Brazos), Finneyโ€™s Books (Airport Boulevard), Resistencia Books (Thrasher), the Little Gay Shop (12th and Chicon), BookWoman (North Lamar), Monkeywrench Books (North Loop), Birdhouse Books and Gifts (Burnet), and the Book Burrow (Pflugerville) โ€“ so give โ€˜em a visit during your weekend whatnot.

Our neighbors over at Georgetown Pride posted last Thursday about their upcoming Pride festival, namely that there might not be one. The October event requires โ€œa significant amount of time, energy, and resources from our team,โ€ they write. โ€œAs a small yet deeply dedicated group of volunteers, putting on a festival of that scale often stretches us thin and leads to burnout.โ€ With assurances that the actual org isnโ€™t dissolving, Georgetown Pride asks its community to fill out an interest form linked on their Instagram to โ€œinform our decision on whether we are able to move forward with hosting a Pride Festival this year.โ€ Theyโ€™re also seeking applications for currently open board member positions.

Last Wednesday, ASHwell โ€“ aka Austin Sexual Health and Wellness โ€“ held an emergency fundraising livestream. For 24 hours, staff members, drag performers, and others talked about the importance of the nonprofit queer health clinic, which is currently facing financial woes revealed after major leadership changes. Sandra Chavez and Clarena Tobon currently hold interim executive co-director roles, and there is hope from staff that this shift will keep the org from losing more than 50 employees. In an interview with Kit Oโ€™Connell for Austin Free Press โ€“ thank you for your reporting, Kit! โ€“ marketing and outreach specialist Abraham Resendez stated none of the clinicโ€™s services are in danger, while intake specialist Aracely Flores added, โ€œItโ€™s not just caring about ourselves, itโ€™s the communities we provide for. Weโ€™re the biggest advocates for them here, and we understand what they go through and I think itโ€™s important that we stay here.โ€ The clinic continues to take donations through their website, ashwellatx.org/stream.

This yearโ€™s been a real deluge of tough decisions and heartbreak. What little weโ€™re all able to do, though, must be done, and if that means coughing up five bucks to community orgs, sharing a fundraiser on socials, or reaching out a hand to help someone on their feet, then thatโ€™s what ya gotta do. Have a safe and hopefully less wet week out there, queers!
