Lights, camera, sapphic cinema! Two of Austinโ€™s leaders in the lesbians-having-fun scene are combining their powers this Friday for a Juneteenth/Pride screening at Hyperreal Film Club. Carabiner Club, the sapphic cinema arm of HFC helmed by Louise Ho, and event organizers TribRelations present nightlife doc Shakedown (2018), a look back at Los Angelesโ€™ Black lesbian strip club boom from 2002-04 directed by Leilah Weinraub. In addition to the 7:30pm screening, what was originally released as the first non-pornographic feature on Pornhub will have an afterparty for viewers and walk-ins alike around 10:30 with performances by the Great Flying Cervix and DJ Kuntress.

This sapphic supergroup came about as most gay stuff does in Austin โ€“ an introduction by local scene shaker Beth Schindler where TribRelationsโ€™ team and the Carabiner Club shook hands. The meeting was serendipitous, too, as Ho says sheโ€™d been seeking an opportunity to screen Shakedown for some time. โ€œIโ€™m thrilled at a chance to collaborate with TribRelations,โ€ she says, โ€œwhich carries on the Shakedown torch of Black lesbian nightlife pop-ups here in Austin.โ€

TribRelationsโ€™ own Marr, aka drag performer Justin Eater, says the groupโ€™s first intro to Shakedown was through Carabiner Clubโ€™s suggestion. Watching the feature felt โ€œvery affirming to what we are doing as an org,โ€ Marr explains. โ€œIt was also so so cool to see lesbian history in a way I had personally never seen it before.โ€ The documentaryโ€™s themes of creating, growing, and protecting Black sapphic spaces matches perfectly with TribRelationsโ€™ entire ethos, she says.

โ€œItโ€™s perfect because the movie celebrates and showcases queer art,โ€ writes Marr via email, โ€œwhich falls in line with it being pride month, and then the fact that itโ€™s on Juneteenth is the cherry on top since itโ€™s also highlighting creations of spaces and expression for and by black people.โ€

As the first documentary featured in Carabiner Clubโ€™s programming, Ho finds that the movie continues the series’ efforts to offer indie sapphic filmmaking โ€œthat emphasizes joy and community.โ€ Given Austinโ€™s lack of a lesbian bar, โ€œ[the] pop-up scene in Austin is very robust,โ€ which Ho connects to Shakedownโ€™s chronicling of the underground lesbian go-go and strip club scene: โ€œI think it will be inspiring and relatable to sapphics in Austin.โ€

Attending the party after the movie? Get ready for a โ€œsafe space for ass shaking, dancing, and fun free of judgment,โ€ says Marr. Thereโ€™ll also be performances and activities during the usual Hyperreal intermission period mid-movie, so make sure you get your pee break in quick. And if the spirit of Shakedown stays with ya into the next day? Ho recommends checking docu-short โ€œTโ€™Ainโ€™t Nobodyโ€™s Business,โ€ a dive into the 1920s Black queer blues scene, or drag king docs like โ€œStorme, Lady of the Jewel Boxโ€ and 2002โ€™s Venus Boyz.

Oh, and one more note before you attend: โ€œShakedown is way more sexually graphic than [Carabiner Clubโ€™s] usual romance films,โ€ Ho says. โ€œ[Itโ€™s] wall-to-wall loud music, thongs, and raunchy dancing โ€“ should be fun!โ€

And thereโ€™s this feature, a document of the time itself, seen through the eyes of Rosa von Praunheim and narrated by Tally Brown, a torch singer and star of Warholโ€™s films. Taylor Mead, Divine, Holly Woodlawn, and more cameo as Brown takes you on a tour of her life in the gritty and glamorous city, in this vรฉritรฉ artifact of a time and place bursting with now-legendary creativity. โ€“ Lina Fisher

Hackers

Screening at Austin Public Libraryโ€™s Hampton branch for Pride Month, this super Nineties flick features costumes inspired by the hot fashions of New York Cityโ€™s Wigstock drag festival. So if youโ€™re wondering who to thank for Matthew Lillardโ€™s little mesh-centric outfits? Yeah, thatโ€™d be drag queens, babe! โ€“ James Scott
