As August dwindles to just a hot month in the rearview, I’m looking toward the fall season and all it promises. For one, cooler weather is at least a possibility – though a pretty slim one, at least until October – and for two, the pressure to really rainbow it up will become a little less omnipresent. Don’t get me wrong; I love Pride season and how it brings even the most cloistered out into the gay streets. But I love the autumn energy, where everyone’s unique expression of their queerness comes forward rather than the monolithic idea of LGBTQ-ness often hawked by gay industrial complex. I mean, we’ve got gay Halloween coming up! Think of all the costumes yet to come…
In other, slightly monolithic LGBTQ culture news, the 20th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is casting! Most drag performers have probably been on this beat for months, but in case y’all weren’t aware, ya know. Interested talent should hit up www.worldofwonder.com/casting to fill out the online app, at which point audition tape instructions ought to be emailed to you. Then film that tape and put it in da Dropbox – and wait to hear if you’ve got “the Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent it takes to become America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Deadline to apply is October 23 at midnight.
Happy birthday, the Little Gay Shop! This queer commerce hub was born seven years ago – 2019, the same year I started at the Chronicle, BTW! – as a pop-up during Austin Pride. From the Airport Boulevard storefront that really was “little” to their current brick-and-mortar on 12th, TLGS has grown in scale and scope. To quote their anniversary Instagram post: “We’ve become a place in this community where all queer people are welcome and can feel safe and feel seen and feel supported.” Check out this week’s Qmmunity listings for birthday celebrations, including a beer release at St. Elmo, who’re the people who hosted TLGS at that long-ago pop-up.
