Project PHASE, the program which effectively addresses problems faced
by the university area’s homeless, may find itself in a similar housing crisis
after June 1, 1997 — the date their current space deal with the Congregational
Church concludes. Tonight, Thu, Feb 27, 7pm, the University Baptist Church
Missions Committee calls an area meeting at San Antonio & 22nd, of
congregations, businesses, and community organizations, to discuss options for

Pre-Spring Fling Thing
It’s a little early and sure doesn’t feel like Spring as we tap this on ourfrosty keyboard with shivver-r-rrring fingers, but Sun, Mar 2 brings La
Primavera: A Spring Market & Music Fest to La Zona Rosa. Doors open at
11am with a $3 admission until 5pm, when the door price goes to $6. Perhaps
hoping to thaw hands and hearts, Casa Marianella hosts the Spring
celebration to raise money for their shelter for immigrants and political
refugees. Crafts, jewelry, pottery, clothing, etc., will be on sale. Toqui
Amaru, the ACC Jazz Band, Susanna Sharpe, and Javelin Boot, and more musical

Whine and Mac & Cheese
It’s a gallery opening of a different sort… Brentwood Elementary willhold its annual Student Art Auction, Thu, Mar 6, 6:30pm at the school,
6700 Arroyo Seca. Nearly 30 works of art will be for sale to the highest
bidder, and the artists will be in attendance to experience first-hand what
it’s like to be schmoozed up by a gallery crowd. In conjunction with this
year’s theme of Japanese art, second and third graders will set the mood with
song and performance. All proceeds will benefit the school’s art program. Bring

Hey, kids! Tell the folks about the Webb Middle School ParentingConference, Sat, Mar 1, 12:30-5:30pm. Parenting Through Changes is
offered free at 601 E. St. John’s. Maybe the folks could stand to bone up on a
few elementals regarding the challenges of raising you modern tikes, like:
helping children deal with racism; parenting alone; talking to children about
sexuality; and the changing roles of fathers, just to name a few topics.

Sierra Mad
If these events this week don’t make you at least slightly more awareof the problems faced by the community of Sierra Blanca, then you just go and
stick your head under the piles of nuclear waste that the great state of Texas
is attempting to quietly bury there. Texas on Trial is a series of
events scheduled for Sat, Mar 1, 4pm by the Sierra Blanca Legal Defense
Fund. Head over to the State Capitol Building’s south steps to hear a
series of environmental speakers and locals from the beleaguered town. At
6:45pm, Sally Jacques and a crew of local artists will present a performance
protest called Objection (See Listings). Then everyone is invited to La
Zona Rosa for Dump Aid `97 featuring local bands and musicians.
