the precedent for fun!), the Downtown Austin Alliance (DAA) (n�e Downtown Management Organization) has the right idea when it
comes to getting the general public out in the grid — entertain them, they
will come. Promoters of the Tuesday Noontime Concerts at Regents’ Plaza,
Sixth & Colorado (uuuh, that would be Tuesdays, at noon…), the DAA heads
into the nighttime for their Election Day special First Tuesday
Downtown, Tue, Nov 5, 5-9pm, which will feature musicians and dancers,
sidewalk sales, art shows, and performance art, among other forms of merriment
and mirth all over Congress Avenue from the Capitol Building to Town Lake.

PowWower of the Drum
Last year’s AISD American Indian Powwow was an amazing flurry of colorand fanfare celebrating American indigenous culture. This year, even more
artists, dancers, and musicians from many corners, from many tribes, head to
Austin for the nation’s largest single-day powwow. Staffed entirely by
volunteers, this year’s gathering, Sat, Nov 2, at the Toney Burger Center
promises to be bigger than ever. Admission is free; remember to leave room for

Power Plant to the People
The Friends of the Seaholm would like to see the ol’ warhorse put touse and avoid the fate of the wrecker ball. The retired power plant at

W. Cesar Chavez recalls the art deco era in Austin’s history. The Friends
invite the public for a Tour of the Seaholm, Wed, Nov 6, 2:30pm., to
support an initiative to ask City Council to ready the facility for cultural
use by the year 2000. There is free parking at the south side of the building,
where the tour (hosted by Councilmember Beverly Griffith) begins.

Why restate the obvious? Errr, because the Helmet Law reallydoes suck? The League of Bicycling Voters is working hard to
repeal the law, not out of disdain for protective head gear nor out of contempt
for social order but instead for the pure, elemental principle of the thing:

Well, we don’t know (or much care) what appears to you in your dreams, but thesuggestive title of the Tail Chaser’s Dream Gala & Auction probably
doesn’t mean what you think. It’s a fundraiser for the Humane Society of
Austin & Travis County. The sweeping vistas of Citiview Bed &

City of Austin Art in Public Places Program wants you, you wild artisttype. The new Ralph W. Yarborough Branch Library is to be housed in the old
American Theatre (on Hancock, west of Burnet), and is in need of some artful
tarting in the way of murals, environmental graphics, or lightweight sculpture,

“Public Notice” will print Holiday Wish Lists in early December. Submit
a list of 10 items your organization needs. On your organization’s stationery,
include your name, address, and phone and a contact name and number for
publication, and address it to “Holiday Wish List” using the guidelines below.
Deadline for Holiday Wish Lists is Fri, Nov 15.
Don’t forget! If your organization is selling gift items for holiday
fundraising, please let us know. We are compiling our Blue Lights
Anonymous holiday specials to be run in the upcoming weeks before the
