The Power to Heal, to Rule Two superpowers of charity are deep into the new fall season, with major
fundraisers:

* The September Serenade — An Evening at the Paramount With Christine Albert
& Friends is next Sun, Sep 15, 6:30-8:30pm and will benefit the programs of
the Austin Rape Crisis Center. After the evening’s performance by this generous
performer and her superfriends, Toni Price, Marcia Ball, Betty Elders, Sara
Hickman, Sarah Elizabeth Campbell, and Kelly Willis, ARCC will host a light
buffet reception for underwriters in the Mezzanine. Last year, ARCC offered
free crisis counseling to over 2,000 survivors of sexual assault — over 800,
or 40%, of which were children. 445-5776.

* The Center for Battered Women celebrates 19 years of live-saving and
life-affirming service to Austin, sheltering women and children from violent
home environments. The organization is celebrating in a big way at Stubb’s BBQ,
Thu, Sep 12,
6-8pm at the CBW Anniversary Party with fine food from over 18
restaurants and music by 47 Indians. The Center will also be selling Raffle
Tickets for their big fall giveaway of two airline tickets from American
Airlines and a variety of other high-end prizes to be awarded at the party.
Raffle tickets are available in advance for $5 each at Sacks II Thrift Store,
4631 Airport, until the evening of the shindig. 385-5181. [[exclamdown]]Felz Quince!

(acoustic stage); and Roy Heinrich, 81/2 Souvenirs, and Wayne “The
Train” Hancock (electric stage). Admission is a wee $5 and the little ones
under 12 get in free with a paid adult. Proceeds will benefit the Austin Museum
of Art at Laguna Gloria. 454-5766. Singin’ & Swingin’ Two local choirs want you. One to join and one to listen! The Capital City
Men’s Chorus is seeking new members. Attend an Open Rehearsal, Mon, Sep 9, 16,
or 23, 7pm at the University United Methodist Church. 371-1307.

The Austin City-Wide Southern Gospel Choir will host a night of Community
Gospel Singing, Sat, Sep 28, 7-9pm at the Northwest Hills United Methodist
Church. Love offerings will be joyfully accepted. 873-7510. XXX Adults Rising XXX Always wanted to break into the film industry, but didn’t hang with the right
crowd? Well sweetheart, Austin is quite the film town, and if you can make it
here, you can make it, well… here, and this might be your chance. Local film
dude and founding member of The Administration, Heyd Fontenot, has a new epic
entitled Peckers Rising which promises at least as much thrusty movement
and boy titillation as the sexy art film which inspired the name. Sexy Art
Film
, yea, that’s a good term. “Porno” is so tired, after all. But a
rose is a rose, and we should be up front about this: It’s porno.

See, there’s a screening at the Dobie, at the Austin Gay & Lesbian
International Film Festival, Sun, Sep 8, 2pm, and immediately following is a
Post-Production Benefit Party to raise more than just the topic of the title.
The party is at Holy 8 Ball Studio, 2206 E. Seventh, Sun, Sep 8, 5pm, with a $3
cover. Now, $3 is not going to raise a lot of pe… pennies, so the filmmaker
is offering a special opportunity for wannabe producer-types: $20 will assist
in the completion of an original Austin film and buy your name a slot in
the credits. You will be listed as a “Fluffer.”

“Fluffer” is one of those groovy movie words like “Grip,” “Best Boy,” and
“Wild Track,” that, unless you are down with the scene, man, you
probably will have no occasion to use. So, we’ll clue you: A “Fluffer” is the
person on the set who makes sure that the “star” of the movie (remember the
title of the film and that we’re talking porno, here) is…
(ahem) at attention… er, um… ready for the next close up, Mr. DeMille…
aah, if you catch our drift. 320-0442.
