Outta the Gutter! Between the groovy bowling shirts bearing loopy embroidered names like “Helga”
and “Sheckey” and the tacky Hawaiian shirts of many colors, this year’s Hula
Bowl benefit Bowl-a-Thon to raise dough for the Crohn`s & Colitis
Foundation, should be the fashion event of the season, Sat, Oct 5 at the
recently relocated Austin fave, Dart Bowl, 5700 Grover. As indicated by the
name, this year’s theme “takes” charity bowlers to the Hawaiian islands and all
participants are encouraged to dress just like tacky tourists headed for the
fabulous 50th: leis, grass skirts, flip-flops, loud shirts — you know the
drill. The foundation raises funds for education and research for Crohn’s
disease and ulcerative colitis, affecting nearly two million Americans —
which, according to the foundation, is more than muscular dystrophy, cerebral
palsy, and cystic fibrosis combined.
800/785-2232. Viva la Raza This Latin American holiday is significant to our Austin Latino/a Lesbian
& Gay Organization (ALLGO) for more than the obvious reasons. Aside from
celebrating a proud cultural heritage, ALLGO celebrates 11 years of serving
the Austin community with their commitment to establishing cultural and
artistic renaissance within communities of color. Come enjoy their
enlightenment, Sun, Oct 6, 2-8pm at Plaza Mexico Tipico, 1707 E. Sixth.
472-2001. 10,080 Minutes One week without violence… can you imagine such a thing? Well, the
University YWCA can and does and for the second year announces the Week Without
Violence, Sun, Oct 6 — Sat, Oct 12, with events and themes each day of the
week geared toward raising awareness and suggesting alternatives to the
horrendous reality in our culture, so often accepted as a given. YWCA joins
with other area organizations in this effort, and by the publication of this
issue, should have a full list of events and participants, so do call.
326-1222.
In related news, the Abused Women’s Active Response Emergency (AWARE) Program
announces along with the Austin Police Department and ADT Security Systems the
availability of emergency personal security devices for the residences of
battered or abused women in the area. As with the above event, this is an
interagency cooperative project. 480-5017. Easy Being Green The Green Room, 306 E. Fifth, is the site for KOOP Radio’s big benefit
blow-out blast and Thank You Party, Sat, Oct 5, 8:35pm. The little community
radio station with the big heart (America’s Only Cooperative FM), wants
to thank renewal and new members and all volunteers for a bitchin’ pledge
drive. Jazz with a capital “J” is the order of the eve with explorations into
modern, classic and international from the likes of Araxia Trio, Aquaviva, the
East Babylon Symphony, and Straight-Ahead Impromtu with Tina Marsh, Martin
Banks, Elias Haslanger, and Edwin Livingston. Top it off with SXIP (+) (Oooohh,
that intrigues us Huge Sxip Fans), Tammy Gomez & megaha. It’s only
$3 unless you are one of the folks KOOP is specifically thanking, and what the
hell, that’s cheap, especially for that calibre of entertainment.
472-1369. Easier Being Gray
In a town where the demographic profile says you are more likely to be Gay and
Green, if ya know what we mean, The Gay & Gray Workshop for Men fills a
niche that often seems overlooked in our li’l transient college-town culture.
The workshop, hosted by Prime Timers of Austin, will cover concerns financial,
physical, legal, and emotional, Sat, Oct 5, 9am-4:30pm at 425 Woodward. The
cost is $7.50 in advance; $10 at the door. Now, how ’bout one for the gay and
gray sisters? 282-2861. Eat, Walk = Life For those of you who live to eat out (don’t go there; that’s not what we
mean!!), here’s the fundraiser for you. The line-up of restaurants is, as
usual, impeccable; the cause invincible; the date, Mon, Oct 7 and you can do it
all day long. Yes, it’s the ever-popular Dining for Life benefit for AIDS
Services of Austin and 18 other AIDS services organizations, in which the
restaurant community comes together to let you do what you do best, Austin: Eat
(for a good cause). Call for a list of participating restaurants and mealtimes,
and save room for dessert. 406-MEAL.
Oh! And don’t forget: AIDS Walk 1996 is the new name for what was previously
called From All Walks of Life. The annual community convergence/benefit is
coming, Sun, Oct 27. Mark your calendar, grab a pledge sheet, sign away all
your beer money, get those dusty takkies out the closet, and hit the turf.
452-WALK. Shout It From the Hilltop It doesn’t much matter whether one works to help ease the suffering of many
people or of just one person, a generous heart is a generous heart. The Hilltop
Madness Party, Sat, Oct 5, at 15 Pillow Road, in Sunset Valley, will benefit
one little girl named Emma in need of funds for a bone marrow transplant. They
need revelers at $10 a pop as well as volunteers. Children`s Organ Transplant
Association, Inc. (COTA), will dedicate 100% of the proceeds of this party to
aid in Emma’s transplant expenses. An account has been set up for Emma; send
to: COTA for Emma; Bank One Capital Plaza, 5407 N. I-35, Austin, TX 78723.
