…to come to the aid of their Austin Community Gardens. Cuts in funding have seriously taken the wind out of many of the Garden’s programs, including the youth and educational programs, and the food pantry gardens which help feed the needy. We hope, it won’t be a case of too little, too late. Unfortunately, ACG has already laid off staff members and cut services significantly. 458-2009.

Well, those wacky non-capitalists from Grassroots News Network are having a Travel Fund Garage Sale to raise dinero to get members of the Zapatista Front, Black Liberation Radio, and other media types into Austin for the first Grassroots News & Media Conference & Culture Jam. H.R. Huff & Puff

We just wanted to remind you about the ultramarathon – the grueling 50K running event around the 4.3 mile course which circles Town Lake, Sat, Jun 6, 6am (limited to the first 100 entrants). It’s part of a runners Triple Crown taking place next weekend to benefit Easter Seals. It all starts with the 24-Hour Relay, Fri, Jun 5, 7pm at St. Ed’s University. Then comes the Run-Tex Ultramarathon at Town Lake, and finally, the women’s Danskin Triathalon, Sun, Jun 7 on Lake Travis (which will also benefit the Susan B. Komen Foundation). Phew! 478-2581.

Three Sides to the Story

A three-sided polygon of love, Tri-Angel Unlimited (TAU) Community Empowerment Center and their pals Painting Austin & Its Neighborhoods Together (PAINT) are spreading it around this weekend, Sat-Sun, May 30-31. Paint, that is. Over 30 volunteers will brighten the spirits and faades of some residents on Salina Street. Would you care to join them? 494-0760.

Yes, There Is Free Lunch!

Beginning Mon, June 1 and lasting through most of July, Austin Parks & Recreation Department offers free nutritious lunch to kids at local parks, playgrounds, schools, and community and rec centers every Monday through Friday. The free Summer Food Service Program expects to feed over 63,000 meals this season. No enrollment is required, just a kid (ages 1-18) and an appetite. The duration of the program varies from place to place. The menu is cold lunch and is served at a variety of times. Generally, if you get there between noon and 12:45pm there will be food. 480-3025.

Vacate

Right! Who can take a vacation while taking care of the kids and working full time for pennies like you do? Consumer Credit Counseling Service knows that even folks on a tight budget need some R&R. Especially those on a tight budget. They’ve drawn up a list of suggestions and planning guides to assist those who need to rest and relax but think that they don’t have enough budgeted to enjoy their free time. CCCS has shown many belt-tightened Austinites how to face down the budget beast square in its ugly green eye. Call them for these and other suggestions for making the most out of a limited supply of cash. 447-0711.
