A community’s vitality is often measured by the increase of area business and construction. That surge of flowing capital is called “progress” to many folks. It’s hard to believe that our local economy was not always so booming. The Texas bust of the mid-Eighties seems so far removed. Retail and services are growing, catering to fatter, overflowing wallets. (Just look through this issue’s Downtown Guide for a gasp at the explosion in our city’s heart.)
Public service groups, on the other hand, are often the stragglers in this upswing. So, it’s doubly rewarding to see them thrive. On one hand, we’re sad to see that there remains such a need for their dedication, that so many social problems still exist. But on the other hand, we’re encouraged to see that resources are expanding and that the groups themselves are not struggling just to survive.

Last November, Boys & Girls Club of Austin and Travis County celebrated the Grand Opening of its new site at the old Anderson High at the Alternative Learning Center, 900 Neal, in East Austin. The festivities brought in donations to cover the $10 membership fee for many kids who can’t afford it. 494-9203.

Sunshine Camps will benefit from the fun-filled event, It’s a Jungle Out There, sponsored by the Young Men’s Business League & the Young Women’s Alliance. The event, Fri, Feb 6, promises a buffet dinner, live entertainment by Dysfunkshun Junkshun, a silent auction, and public presentation of the chosen winners in the Austin Under Forty Awards. Our Aim Is True
Alison Kennedy has seen it all. Last year, she was the victim of unthinkable horror, as her former husband shot her, left her for dead, and abducted their young son. The young boys’ father took his own life. Fortunately, the life of their young son was spared. Alison’s story of courage, determination, and family dedication and love made front page news. Some local musicians, including Leeann Atherton, Dosmillard, Shades of Pearl, Killing Ophelia, Laughing Dogs, and Humblebums have gotten together a Benefit for Alison and the Kennedy Family for next weekend, Sat, Feb 7, 8pm at Waterloo Ice House at Sixth & Lamar. 478-4432 or 622-1158.
