Judge W. Jeanne Muerer of the 98th District Court will discuss the current juvenile justice system and afterward, the League will share their plans and schedule for the upcoming year. The Center for Battered Women‘s 20th Anniversary Party (remember? They’re giving away a Love Bug…) is Wed, Sep 24, 6-8pm at Schlotsky’s Bread Alone, 218 S. Lamar. If it’s anything like last year’s, it will be packed and it will be fun. This year, they are raffling off a VW “Love Bug,” along with their typical array of cool prizes (plane tix, shopping sprees, etc.). Raffle tickets are still available. 385-5181.
The Texas Council on Family Violence is accepting mail-in registrations for the Building a New World Statewide Family Violence Conference at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Houston, Sun-Wed, Oct 5-8. 794-1133.

Kirk Watson, you scamp! First the cover of XLent., and now this! The mayor, in a decisive stroke declared next weekend, Sat-Sun, Sep 20-21 “Teddy Bear Weekend.” Okay, okay, we won’t make any snide remarks since we have kids…. The reason for the declaration is the Austin Junior Forum‘s annual Teddy Bear Picnic at the Northwest Recreation Center, Sat-Sun, Sep 20-21, 10am-4pm. The money raised goes to purchase teddy bears which are used in emergency situations by EMS, Fire, Police, and Victims Services workers. 472-1305 or 472-0079.

Che Your Booty
Thirty years ago this Mon, Oct 8, Che Guevarra was assassinated by the U.S.-backed government in Bolivia. His death and more importantly, his life, became a symbol for liberation struggles the world over. The Comite de Solidaridad con Chiapas y Mexico is celebrating his life in their Che Para Chiapas homage, Sun, Oct 8, 6-10pm at the South Austin Cultural Center in the Resistencia Bookstore. They are putting out a Call for Artists to contribute work for an Auction to benefit the struggle of the indigenous people in Chiapas. Artists might also share poetry, music, drama, film, etc., for the celebration. 416-8885 or 454-8097.
