What a Difference a ‘W’ Makes

This is a blurb about how erring is human and how we are so divinely inclined to do so.

Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! DOH! We goofed. We must’ve been standing on our heads. We typed an “M” instead of a “W.” We might have never realized our gaffe, had the vigilant Barbara from the “Y” not pointed it out. A few weeks ago, as we were ticking through the myriad events of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October), we mistakenly listed the all-day Friday Violence in Our Community Conference, Exploring Practical & Sustainable Alternatives, as being sponsored by the YMCA, when it is indeed being presented by the YWCA, this Friday, Oct. 20, 8:30am-4:30pm, at the Red Lion Hotel, 6121 N. I-35. “Thanks for the announcement,” writes Barbara, “but the gals are doing this, not the guys! A woman’s work is never done …” You ain’t kidding. Speaking of which, conference keynoters Glenn & Mary McIntosh, along with their 16-year-old daughter Cassie, will share stories of their suffering in light of the tragic suicide of their 12-year-old daughter Caitlin and their strength and dedication to their group Suicide and Violence Education Resource Services (SAVERS). Now, here’s the dealio: Originally, the walk-up fee for the conference was going to be a $10 jump from the advance registration price of $80. But since we gaffed (and so charmingly so), the Women of the Y will offer a “Public Notice” Walk-Up Discount if you mention you read it here. Can you beat that? Here’s yet another reminder that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and another reminder for the big, early-November events to cap off the proceedings: The 2000 Komen Concert for the Cure, featuring an all-star reunion of Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, and Lou-Ann Barton, plus special guest Donna Hightower at the Ben Hur Shrine Temple, on Friday, Nov. 3, 7:30pm, and the 2000 Komen 5K Race for the Cure, taking off from the GSD&M building at Sixth & Lamar two days later, Sunday, Nov. 5, 8am. Vote Like You Mean It; Somebody’s Gotta

You’re not going to be subjected to the neighing of our weighing in on the shenanigans of the upcoming elections, fret not. Nope. That’s what endorsement pages are for. Different department all together. We will tell you, however, about three local orgs offering you info to help you mark educated checkmarks in those ballot boxes.

  • League of Women Voters has published a new edition of its popular nonpartisan Voters Guide. Copies can be found at all local public libraries, in the Perry Castañeda library at UT, and libraries on the St. Ed’s and Concordia campuses. 451-6710.

  • Austin Lesbian/Gay Political Caucus will throw an Early Vote Rally to encourage voters to get out and do it early (they have distributed a list of early polling places on their endorsement list), this Saturday, Oct. 21, noon, at Woolridge Park near the Travis County Courthouse. www.outaustin.org or 474-0750.

  • The Austin Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women, Congregation Beth Israel Social Action Committee, and the Jewish Community Association of Austin Community Relations Council present a Candidate Forum, next Sunday, Oct. 29, 2-4pm at the Jewish Community Campus, 7300 Hart. 735-8044.

  • The Menudo Cook-Off & Salsa Festival, happens this Saturday, Oct. 21, 3pm-midnight and Sunday, Oct. 22, 2-10pm, at Fiesta Gardens, featuring music (see photo: Those guys are playing.
