Well, this week is Al Gore and the Democrats’ turn, and tonight, Thursday, Aug. 17, is the last night you can catch the “action.” Or can you? Two weeks ago, we passed along info we received about the Independent Media Center‘s alternative to the national snooze coverage of the goings on outside the Republicans’ party in Philly. The Democratic National Convention is happening this week in Los Angeles, and the IMC is stationed in downtown L.A. attempting to cover the craziness. Apparently, their satellite truck, parked outside of their headquarters in the curiously named Patriotic Building, was evacuated on Monday, with police pointing to an alleged bomb threat. According to the IMC Web site, “The police have cordoned off the building’s parking lot, which is preventing the IMC from broadcasting the satellite transmission of its daily live TV show, Crashing the Party. LAPD have also mentioned a possible evacuation of the building. The LAPD received the tip, a description of a vehicle that police said matched the IMC’s VW van, from an unknown source at their command post. A member of the National Lawyer’s Guild reported that police told her they received the tip this morning, but did not arrive at the Patriotic Building until late afternoon, moments before the live broadcast of the IMC’s Crashing the Party. Their presence blocked Indy Media from accessing its satellite transmission equipment, necessary to relay the program to television networks.”The IMC has affiliates here in Austin and their programming can be seen on ACAC. Tonight, Thursday, Aug. 17, check out their latest on what’s happening on L.A. on channel 10, 10pm-2am and on Friday, Aug. 18, on channel 16, midnight-2am. And again, as was the case a few weeks ago, local IMC folks are planning a public viewing of the footage at Movements Gallery, 211 E. Sixth (upstairs), tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 20, 5pm. Tune in, turn on, or hang out, and see for yourself. www.indymedia.org or 476-3713. … but the desire to help one another is — which is always an admirable quality to have to qualify as a “Public Notice.” Plus, this particular event has two of our favorite phrases in it. Here’s one of ’em: Raise the Roof Day, is three weeks away, Saturday, Sept. 9, 8am-3pm. Since the Austin Metropolitan Ministries Hands On Housing program involves a good deal of physical strength and/or stamina, we figured we’d give you a few weeks to buff up.
Volunteers are needed on this day to assist in the renovation of houses in East Austin. Professional contractors will be on hand to coach newbies on proper technique and procedure. Building materials and an afternoon meal will be provided, so you don’t need to worry about lugging your lumber or lunch to the site. If you are more inclined to sit back and watch others do the work (and can afford to do so), consider making a generous Cash Donation (that lunch and lumber’s gotta come from somewhere).
