This is the 1,000th regular issue of The Austin Chronicle. Here’s how that breaks down:
We published Vol.1, No.1, on Sept. 4, 1981. For our first seven years, we published biweekly. 7×26 = 182
For volumes 8-14, we skipped an issue at Christmas. 7×51 = 357.* Volumes 15-22 we published weekly. 8×52 = 415.**
This is Vol. 23, No. 46. 1×46 = 46
TOTAL: 1,000
*Vol. 8 had 50 issues; Vol. 11 had 52.
** In 1998, we skipped a holiday issue again, so Vol. 17 had 51 issues.
Then again, if you count the prototype issue that came out in the summer of 1981, I guess this could be the 1,001st issue. Then there are four years of SXSW dailies, which would make 1,015, and a couple of unnumbered special issues … oh well, who’s counting?
