They originated in Ecuador but were made popular
by workers building the Panama Canal.

In 1996, a man claiming to have a bomb held a radio station manager hostage in Wanganui, New Zealand. He demanded to hear “Rainbow Connection,” sung by Kermit the Frog.
The bomb was found to be fake, and the man was charged with kidnapping.
