Graphic designer Alex Steinweiss is often credited as the first person to design a record album cover. When he was hired by Columbia Records in the 1930s, records were sold in the back of appliance stores in plain cardboard jackets. His first cover was for a 1939 collection of songs by Rodgers & Hart.

In 1944, a Scottish court convicted Helen Duncan of pretending to use witchcraft, even though the crime of being a witch was abolished by the 1735 Witchcraft Act. Duncan served nine months in jail. Petitioners with the Scottish Parliament are trying to have her pardoned.
