Speedballs Don’t Bounce

For all the complaints the older generation aims at the younger one,
precious little to do is offered in lieu of the compelling lure of bad
behavior. Enough yammering! Kids need outlets. Kids need challenges. Kids need
fun. Kids need basketball! The Greater East Austin Youth League (GEAYLA) kicks
off the 1996 basketball season at the Pan American Recreation Center. The
messages are simple: gang=bad/team=good; drugs=bad/wailing a perfect,
backboard-free, three-point arc=damn good. 250-9400.

The Web We Weave

[[perthousand]]Dare we start another red scare? Progressive organizations of
the left-leaning variety are invited to share their news, meeting times, and
calls to action with a local posting service which will distribute your info
via e-mail. It works like this: Send your message to Comrade and he tells 10
comrades and they tell 10 comrades and they tell… well, everybody ends up
with shiny hair and your info gets out to approximately 500 netheads directly.
Comrade has limited signature space, so limit your missive to the basic Who,
What, Where, When — forget How and Why, we’re talkin’ surgical strike. Web
wonks may e-mail: tta@mail.utexas.edu and non-Net nuts or luddites may
telephone. 479-6960.

[[perthousand]]In related news, The Texas Observer, hotbed of insightful,
progressive journalism since 1954, announces the launching of its Down Home Web
site: http://www.hyperweb.com/TXObserver. They promise recent articles about
the Freeport flap, mucho Texas news, culture, and art.

Do Appreciate Ya
Being `Round

[[perthousand]]When, when we were younger, so much younger than today, we sure
didn’t face half of the dilemmas of today’s teen. Guess every group of oldsters
turns around and says that in hindsight through misty bifocals. It does seem
more complex today, though, doesn’t it? We’re probably as out of touch as our
elders were, so it stands to reason that teens would relate better to teens
regarding important issues. Communities in Schools has a telephone peer support
program staffed by teen volunteers, supervised by CIS professionals. Like most
hotlines, Teen Helpline offers peer support, info, and referral to other
community service agencies confidentially and anonymously. Helplines are open
Mon.- Fri., 5:30-9:30pm (prime teen gab time). 441-5423.

[[perthousand]]Help them get their feet back on the ground. Assault by a loved
one is indescribable. The dark void of betrayal and loss of trust disorients
more horrifically than the actual physical pummeling. The National Domestic
Violence Hotline helps women and children through the anguish of physical and
emotional abuse. The Austin Center for Battered Women needs volunteers for the
Center and the Hotline. Training for both organizations begins Tue., Jan. 16.
All ethnicities and walks of life, especially hearts with bi-lingual voices,
are needed as this form of horror knows no economic, cultural, ethnic line.
