THANKS, AUSTIN You’re a great town to be gay in. Seriously. Every year, in assessing the things for which I am grateful (rainbows, sunrises, my son, mini ponies, “Gay Place” readers, key lime pie, Edie Falco, my mom), living in Austin, Texas, is right up there. Another thing is Thanksgiving itself – in Austin, Texas. Because that means Thanksgiving at Charlie’s (1301 Lavaca, 474-6481). Free Thanksgiving at Charlie’s. I cannot recommend this afternoon of fellowship enough. The crew at Charlie’s offers a totally free turkey dinner with dressing, taters, gravy, salad, veggies, veggies, veggies, rolls, and a buffet of desserts, all in the spirit of community. It’s tough to convey to some younger folks, who perhaps came out in more accepting times – and even to some straight friends who have no idea the impact of coming out or simply being out has on familial holiday randomness – how profoundly heartwarming this gesture of community truly is. Not to mention how darned good looking the serving crew, bartenders, and even the patrons are. Not a bad side dish at all. So thanks, Charlie’s, and thanks, again, Austin. If you find you are without family this holiday, come on down and grab you a plate – and more importantly, a place … your place at the table with family. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! (See Thursday.)
