HIV at Home: Skills for Caregivers
Providing home care for someone living with HIV/AIDS can be a rewarding
but sometimes stressful experience. AIDS Services of Austin and Christopher
House are collaborating to develop a skills workshop for caregivers. This
workshop will focus on providing members of a PWA’s support network with
practical, how-to information on how to care for someone at home.
The following topics will be addressed: General information about AIDS and the
immune system, nutrition, medications, complimentary therapies, monitoring
health, legal issues, infection precautions, getting your needs met by medical
and social service providers, hospitalization, end-stage home care (how to
transfer someone from bed to wheelchair, give bed baths, etc.), community
resources and what to expect from them, and grief issues. Special attention
will be given to the emotional demands of being a primary care provider and
addressing individual topics important to workshop participants.
This four-part series is scheduled for November 7, 9, 14, and 16, from
6-8:30pm. Childcare and respite care will be available for workshop
