If you know that you are HIV-positive, it’s likely you’ve been grappling with questions ever since you got your test result.

Perhaps you’ve wondered which of the new therapy combinations is right for you. Or, whether to even take the “drug cocktails” or when to start. Do you know how to really communicate with your doctor? Do you understand T-cell counts? Viral load tests? Prevention of opportunistic diseases? What about vitamins? Acupuncture? Eating right? Exercise? If you’ve been feeling well — doing okay — are you wondering “What now?”

Sylvia Lopez, Wellness Services Coordinator for AIDS Services of Austin (ASA), presents a series of programs which offer a practical guide for addressing questions and exploring options for maintaining health and managing HIV. The course is especially appropriate for those with early HIV infection, those who have just learned of their HIV infection, and those seeking to understanding current approaches to HIV management.

“Taking Charge — Strategies for Healthy Living,” will be offered 6:30-9:00 on Tuesday evenings, July 15, July 22 and July 29 at ASA, 825 E. 531/2 Street. The first session is on medical monitoring, and the second focuses on treatments. The third program surveys holistic therapies, nutrition, and exercise. Information from recent conferences and research studies will be included.

Interested persons may attend any or all of these programs. Also invited are past participants who missed a session or who are interested in updated information. Registration is encouraged so that materials can be prepared for all. Refreshments will be served.

Healthy behaviors and a personal involvement in medical care are frequently cited as factors that support long-term survival. Studies show that HIV+ people who take an active approach to promoting health of body, mind, and spirit fare better than those who only react to illness, and much better than those who do not act at all.
