It isn’t often that the community has an opportunity to remember those lost to AIDS, while also honoring those who are struggling today with HIV disease, much less to do so worldwide. Just such an event will be held on Sunday evening, May 15: the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial service.

The Candlelight Memorial, now in its 22nd year, is organized by the Global Health Council, one of America’s most respected health policy organizations. This is the sixth year that Austin has participated, joining more than 1500 communities in 85 countries around the world. Turning Remembrance Into Action will be this year’s worldwide theme. Locally, the Candlelight service will include speakers, music, poems, and songs.

This year’s event will be on Sunday, May 15, at 8pm. Austin’s location will be Republic Square Park on Guadalupe between Fourth and Fifth streets. Individual or group speakers, singers and musicians, poem readers, and performing artists are encouraged to participate. To participate or to help with the Candlelight Memorial service, please e-mail the event coordinator, Eric Crabtree, at ozparade@aol.com. For more information on the service itself, please visit www.candlelightmemorial.org.
