Perhaps 2,000 people in Travis County are HIV-infected but unaware of their positive status. Why don’t people get tested for HIV?
In order to answer that question, Wright House Wellness Center is organizing a Community Health Education Day and HIV Testing Drive to increase awareness about HIV and risk behavior and to determine why people are reluctant to get tested. The event will be Friday, April 16, from 9am to 4pm at 2002-A Manor Rd., just east of I-35.
Wright House also has set up a hotline at 236-8919 so people can call and express their ideas about barriers to testing. Anyone who calls, or who answers the question or gets tested for HIV at the event, will be entered in a drawing to win great prizes.
The Community Health Education Day will provide information about HIV/AIDS, cancer, hepatitis, diabetes, and other important health issues, as well as free, confidential HIV testing and counseling. The fun, interactive event will feature music, informational booths, and staff presentations. Wright House will provide free food and refreshments, and several community businesses have donated items and gift certificates as drawing prizes.
