Thrift Shopping for HIV

One avenue to support people living with HIV/AIDS is shopping at (and donating to) Project Transitions’ Top Drawer Thrift. Project Transitions, known for its hospice and housing programs, also works to support the HIV community through its vintage and thrift store, located at 49th and Burnet Road.

Open since 1993, the store directly supports the HIV-positive community through its voucher program. Case management agencies throughout Travis Co. are given vouchers for Top Drawer. They, in turn, distribute them to clients who need extra financial support. The vouchers can be redeemed for merchandise at Top Drawer just like cash, and any item in the store is available for purchase.

Top Drawer also provides household goods and furnishings for Project Transitions’ different housing programs. Residents who come in homeless can have basic household items provided to get them started in their new apartments.

You can help by shopping at Top Drawer (lots of vintage and teen clothes!) or donating your unneeded — but sale-worthy — items. All types of goods are needed, particularly furniture. If you want to place something on consignment or talk about a pickup, call Maggie, the store manager.

Visit Top Drawer Thrift at 4901 Burnet soon, or phone 454-5161. Se habla Español! Look for the dresser drawers on the roof of the colorful store on the corner!
