“I’d like to help, but I don’t know how.” How often we hear this out in the community. One way that everyone can help is to join the effort through AIDS Walk Austin on Sunday, October 15th.
This 5K walk is the largest single AIDS-related fundraiser in Central Texas, helping support care and services for HIV-infected people and their families, as well as prevention and education to stop the further spread of the virus. Whether it’s ASA in social services, the David Powell Clinic in medical care for the indigent, CEACO in prevention education for young black mothers, or Hospice Austin and Project Transitions in support for the dying together, we provide a network of assistance in coping with the impact of this still-devastating disease.
Participating in the Walk is easy: Pick up a registration form at just about any retail establishment in town; get your friends, family, and co-workers to make a donation (tax-deductible!) to AIDS Walk; and bring it all to the Walk on Sunday. You can also register online at AIDSWalkAustin.org or call 452-WALK. As added incentive, a variety of premiums and prizes are offered, from T-shirts to airline tickets from Tramex Travel.
The Walk begins and ends at Waterloo Park, 12th and Red River/Trinity. Money turn-in starts at 11:00am, live entertainment at 11:30, and the Walk at 1:00pm. Afterward, there’ll be lots of live music and refreshments. It’s one of the best outdoor parties in Austin!
Doing the Walk is easy and fun and it does make a difference. As honorary chair Marc Katz observes, “Now more than ever, we need to increase our efforts.” Take this opportunity to make a contribution to your community.
