Well one thing was made clear during the Veep Debate last night. Neither campaign supports gay marriage.
Surprise!
This has always been something of a sore spot for me in my own alignment with the Democratic Party. My friends all tell me that the “Yay civil unions, boo gay marriage” stance is all a performance for those voters who may be all for inclusion but who spin into a panic whenever we call it “gay marriage!” Fuck them. And, you know what, the Democrats’ performance, in general, has been going on for so long now, that I’m not convinced it’s a performance.
Show me the money.
It’s moments like these that just make me seethe. In a debate where most answers were vague or unclear, the only certainty is the lack of support for gay marriage?
Nice. Real nice.
Amidst it all, though, props to Gwen Ifill (love the News Hour!), for innocuously commenting on the differences (or lack of) between the parties. It’s not included in the video clip, but I believe Gwen Ifill’s segue went something like this:
“You both agree. Let’s move on ”
It got an audible laugh, not because it was funny, BUT BECAUSE IT WAS TRUE!
Watch it, queers.
