City Hall, 5:30pm today, gather the troops.
Today is the day when the Supreme Court of California comes out with the decision to uphold or overturn Prop 8. If you’ll remember, the CA Supreme Court chatter was all about whether Prop 8 was written in such a way that it could legally adhere to the California constitution.
Let’s be clear, whatever the California Supreme Court decides, it’s about the interpretation of the prop. It was the voters of California who passed Prop 8 initially, and those who funded the misleading campaign for Prop 8 (cough cough Mormonchurch cough cough).
So we gotsta speak up about it. What happens in one part of our country affects another, and given that marriage is a civil right extended to some but not all, Texans should be saddened and enraged, too.
Is marriage the only civil right we’re concerned about? Of course not, silly! But there are many who find importance in the structures of marriage. This fight is for those folks.
So 5:30pm today, call your queer friends and family, and drag your work-weary, memorial-day-induced-coma bodies to City Hall to be visible and vocal. Not sure what exactly is gonna happen, but it’ll be somethin’!
