Apparently, the last time a total solar eclipse was visible from Central Texas was 1878. So what better place to celebrate this year’s eclipse than the living history museum that takes you back to 1800s Texas? Pioneer Farms offers two days of themed programming, including an old-timey medicine show, a chance to make your own cyanotype (sunprint) or eclipse viewer, and live music from Max and the Hot Pickin 57s at Monday’s Citizen Scientist Sun Party. During the eclipse, Pioneer Farms anticipates the opportunity to take note of its farm animals’ changes in behavior and actually hear the eclipse through a special device that makes it audible. The world’s best DJs, producers, multi-instrumentalists, bands, singers, speakers, artists, and more will coalesce under the Texas skies for four days and nights of exploration, culminating during the total solar eclipse, offering an exceedingly rare chance to experience over four minutes of totality in the picturesque landscape of Reveille Peak Ranch, free from light pollution.

Every now and then I get a little bit restless, and I dream of something wild. Like this, the only total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. until 2044! As Austin won’t be in the “path of totality” again for over 300 years, our stellar Parks & Recreation Department celebrates this once-in-a-lifetime celestial event by bringing out the big dogs – NASA – for a weekend of educational eclipse-themed fun. Hear about eclipses and oceans on other planets, get a selfie with a 2D version of the Perseverance rover, visit the planetarium, check out a six-wheeled rover making its way around the center, and prep for the eclipse with hands-on activities. This program from the city of Austin, run by Farmshare Austin, has opened new market locations. There are now six weekly markets around town that sell Texas-grown produce, eggs, honey, and other groceries all at reduced prices. Most major cards are accepted at these markets and if you are a SNAP customer, you can also use your Lone Star card and Double Up Food Bucks. Locations and schedules are subject to change, so check the current info online to find one near you.

Weekly guided breathwork sessions incorporate lunar and solar cycles, card readings, Kundalini, journaling, and more, and are led by Margaret, who has studied around the world and is a trained midwife, birth & postpartum doula, Reiki master, registered yoga teacher, and kinesiologist.

Purr-actice your poses at an hourlong beginner-friendly yoga session (available at 10am & 1pm) surrounded by furry friends offering squeaks, snuggles, and plenty of kitty playtime. The $25 for the class goes to Austin Pets Alive!, so your Sunday Funday relaxation sesh also benefits a good cause. If dogs could drink, what would be their tipple of choice? My guess: a cold brewski on a good day, but a frozen daiquiri when they’ve had a tough one. Now, dogs cannot actually drink alcohol – not even Spuds MacKenzie – but you can sup for the pups by purchasing a Pawsport from Austin Humane Society. By dropping a crisp $25, you’ll be able to bring your dog along to Dog House Drinkery, MUTTS Canine Cantina Austin, Yard Bar, or the Watering Bowl, where they can run about an on-site dog park and you can get a free drink. Each bar earns you a Pawsport stamp, and all four stamps get you entered in pawsome prize giveaways. It’s no dog-safe daiquiri, but it’ll do until the science is there. – James Scott

The 15th annual Sherwood Forest Faire begins this Saturday and remains open on weekends from 10am to dusk, rain or shine, till April 21. Over 170 artisans will be peddling their wares and showing off demonstrations of the serious craft it takes to make them, ranging from glass blowers, blacksmiths, potters, and leather armor makers to weavers, jewelers, and visual artists. With over 150 live performances a day to choose from, you could witness full-contact jousting, falconry, swordplay, archery, juggling, comedy, or theatre. We all know the best part of the faire is the turkey legs though – so don yourself a cheeky costume, let the mead flow, and get thee to McDade this spring. – Lina Fisher
