    Beat the Heat

With Central Texas experiencing extremely high temperatures, city leaders issued a reminder to be aware of Excessive Heat Watch and Excessive Heat Warning alerts from the National Weather Service. A warning means action should be taken immediately to avoid heat-related illness. The city began a pilot program in July at Republic Square with misting tents and cold bottled water, and always offers facilities like rec centers and libraries as cooling centers. In addition, city pool fees are waived Aug. 9-Sept. 30, except for Barton Springs. Visit the city's website for more information, and always check before you head to an outdoor event: For safety, organizers may cancel events that put people at risk due to the heat.

    Texas Sales Tax Holiday

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds shoppers they can save money on clothes and school supplies during the state’s sales tax holiday, which exempts sales tax on qualified items such as clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced below $100, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.
